Second Spring

Springtime is here

Blossoms have dotted the pastures of the county

Girls smile at the grocery store in their sundresses

We have opened the sunroof

Tori and I took the kids on an Easter egg hunt

We went to your high school for it

And I could feel the palpable pain the whole drive but unable to put my finger on it

Every time I drive within a 5 mile radius of your family’s farm

I can’t fully feel the sunlight

Can’t see it without feeling dread

The sun shine in my skin on this new season

I’m wearing your dresses and subscription shoes

Put your old ring on my index finger everyday

These trinkets where you live now

The only pieces of you left

are the ones for me to wear

The second spring without you

Weeding your front bed

moving the potted ivy’s to your back deck

Spending too much money on new plants

to put in your copper pots

And I’ll cry again tomorrow

If only a tear or two

at the start of every season

It wasn’t supposed to be you
